2012 Call for Discover Design. Over Dinner!
As you may know, the last three years, AFA has hosted a new series called Discover Design. Over Dinner. This program invited the public to have dinner at a very special home or property that was designed by an architect. The owner and architect (and anyone else involved – such as the builder, interior designer, etc.) host and pay for the meal. The guests pay $100 per person and the proceeds go to the Foundation.
In years past, hosts have included:
2009
David Webber at his home
Michael Hsu at La Condessa
Austin City Lofts, Heather McKinney-Larry Speck-and Louise
Harpman were the hosts of a “progressive-style” event.
2010
Dick Clark Hosted at a sports celebrity’s home
Paul Lamb, Fern Santini and Escobedo Construction hosted at the Nowlin House
Tim Cuppett hosted at his own residence
2011 (hotel theme)
Clayton & Little Architects hosted at Hotel Saint Cecilia
Burton Baldridge hosted at The Kimber Modern
The meals can be as simple or as elaborate as you choose. The point is for guests to see wonderful design, “mingle” with like-minded architecture groupies, talk to the architects and have fun! This is also a great opportunity for the architects to show off their work to other potential clients. A board member(s) will attend and help out and give the story about the Foundation. Size doesn’t matter! Intimate or spacious – it’s the design that’s important. This is a great way to show off projects that are too large for the AIA Austin Homes Tour – that the owner would consider because it is intimate.

The Nowlin house was completed in 2002. It was inspired by the architecture of the ancient Maya, a lifelong interest of the owners. The structure is an example of true collaboration between the clients, architect, builder,
interior designer, and many local artisans and craftsmen. The interiors are heavily influenced by early French Art Deco, and include many extraordinary pieces. Architect: Paul Lamb, AIA; Interiors: Fern Santini | Abode; Constructor: Escobedo Construction. Featuring catering by 34th Street.
